Washington April 22 the education commissioner Earl J McGrath resigned saying he would not defend budget cuts that reduce the quality of education He marched to the White House with a resignation letter and sent copies to Hobby and Senator Bridges The move marks a public flareup in the new Health Welfare and Education department He cited plans for a four million dollar slash in vocational education and provided figures showing Eisenhower revisions to Truman requests for veterans educational services and school district payments without funds for new school construction.

Woman's Oven Incident Sparks Fire Loss
An 80-year-old woman in April lit her electric stove for the first time in two years. The blaze caused about $500 in damage. Reward for Accepting Favors Spurs Senate charges
Washington April 22 Senator Williams alleged the Truman administration disciplined a federal tax official for accepting favors from a taxpayer in trouble. He named Carlisle R. Cave as the beneficiary of two pay raises a promotion and a cash bonus. Williams argues the IRS reorganization made it a refuge for administration favorites. He cited prior critics and denied civil service evasion. Cave, of the Mounds Wisconsin, was found in a quarry blast in 1998 near Madison.
