Two Frederick fire companies battled a basement fire at North Market Street School early afternoon caused by a paper bin on the girls’ side. Junior and United companies fought with chemicals and water. no injuries or major loss, principal George L. Miller said rats may have involved and a junk dealer removes stored paper.
The first of a series of debates will be heard Tuesday night in county high schools. Frederick High will defend the negative side against Middletown High in the Frederick YWCA auditorium at 8 o clock, debating the Federal Department of Education bill. The Brunswick and Frederick teams include students Compher James Hull Brown Harley Yinger Haller Zimmermann. a musical program accompanies the event with performances by the high school band and other groups.
Washington reports Assistant Secretary Andrews says Congress must aid enforcement to do more than ping along. He cites proposed bills to tighten prohibition laws, localize enforcement, move alcohol control to the prohibition unit, coordinate Coast Guard and customs, review permits, and curb smuggling with treaties and squads, praising concentration policy for restoring respect for federal law.
Wheeling West Virginia April 26 AP The Boyd mine of the Elm Grove Mining Company will resume Wednesday on a non union basis. Superintendent Joseph Arkwright said the mine was shut down after union miners rejected a semi monthly pay plan. He said the new wage scale cuts about 1.56 per man per day and that all former employees may return if they apply by Wednesday. Those who do not apply must vacate company houses. The Boyd mine employs about 600 workers with union leaders predicting a walkout over the lower pay.
A man named Devern S C Thlins Coleman Dellinger asserts he is Charlie Ross kidnapped as a boy. He plans to travel to Philadelphia this week to meet with the Ross family members, stating phantom agents would escort him to Philadelphia.

William Fikins known as Senator Elkins, longtime Woodmont Rod and Gun Club guide and friend to Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, died at his Woodmont home. An expert angler and hunter, he once played the piano for President Wilson. Survived by his widow Catherine Murphy and six children. former Frederick resident and cousin to David L. Elkins.
The First Baptist Negro congregation church in Carteret was destroyed by fire early today after a white mob drove out Black worshipers yesterday. Race tensions rose as Robert Ducart, a Black man, was arrested for the fatal shooting of John Carroll, a white boxer, during the incident. The Rev. George Teed led services before bricks and stones were hurled through windows and worshipers fled as whites pursued them.
Philadelphia April 26 CAP Scott Campbell escaped from the penitentiary in January 1925 and was again sentenced to fifty to 126 years for highway robbery. At 25 he had been serving 25 to 60 years. the doubled term applies due to the escape under a state law. Campbell was recaptured in Los Angeles last month. Speaks for Rebuilding St James Prof Adrian Onderdank spoke to Alp Saints about raising funds to rebuild the destroyed school building. The school is in the diocese of Maryland and support comes from various sources.

The semi annual Myersville District Sunday School Convention will meet May 2 at Pleasant Waite United Brethren Church Pleasant Walk.
