How Sturgeon Invented the Electro Magnet
A hundred years ago the electro magnet was born with Willam Sturgeon a shoemaker turned inventor in Woolwich near London. He found that a soft iron core in a coil becomes a magnet when current flows and loses magnetism when it stops, paving the way for telegraphy and electric devices. Joseph Henry later improved the design by using multiple closely wound coils for greater strength.
