Vienna reportsHungarian socialists threaten a general strike across the country. If ordered premier Count Tisza would impose martial law amid rising tensions near labor day. Clashes at Elesd in Grosswardein saw a gendarme killed and 23 rioters killed with 40 wounded as strikes spread and shops close.
Senate debate questions the naval bill's permissive build option and a $150,000,000 battleship program. Hale warns that lessons from the Far East show risks of large turreted ships, while Bacon and Stewart discuss submarines and obsolescence. Senators Gorman and Allison critique pace and cost.
In Williamspornt Pennsylvania on April 26 Rev Victor Garak rector of Snowshoe Polish Catholic church was jailed on charges that he beat 16 year old Andrew Sosko to death with a club after the youth refused to attend church. A postmortem statement from Dr R J Young noted the beating and kicking. In Pottsville on the same date B F Weissenger pleaded guilty to murdering his two brothers near Hillside, receiving a 36 year sentence.
Santo Domingo reports United States Minister Powell is confined to his bed with illness not deemed serious and under a doctor’s care. In Massachusetts, Quincey notes the Rhode Island battleship launch, scheduled for Saturday, postponed indefinitely due to Fore River labor troubles.
St Petersburg April 26 The emperor received General Kuropatkin telegraphing that Sassulitch reports Japanese pontoon material and boats near Wiju and Sigou 10 miles up the Yalu. A Japanese detachment crossed 10 miles below Siaoupouskihke April 23. Rennenkampf’s cavalry totals about 2000 men crossing upper Yalu to threaten Inouye’s left flank while Russian and Manchurian forces maneuver.
The Vladi vostok squadron, after a long inactivity, appeared off Gen San on Korea’s east coast and sank the 600 ton Goyo Maru, a Japanese merchant steamer. The squadron includes cruisers Russia, Gromoboi, Rurik, and Bogatyre, with the last a protected cruiser. Foreign observers assigned to Japanese forces are ordered to leave for the front next Saturday, with a group of foreign captains and officers accompanying them.

Report of an assassination plot against French President Loubet circulating in Rome is contradicted. A French priest shouted of killing Loubet at the Italia office, prompting police inquiry but no suspect identified. Delaware case details a grand jury true bill against Mrs Mary A Powell for the February 9 killing of her foster daughter Miss Estelle Albin. State detectives Sheriff Melvin and witness James Hollegen were involved as the Attorney General Ward stated the confession.
The first of seven trains bound for the Los Angeles general conference of the Methodist church departed Philadelphia under the personal escort plan. Each train carries 120 people with sleeping and dining cars, stenographers, ladies maids, agents, chaperons, and baggage staff. The group includes official delegates from several states and many nondelegates, described as the largest transcontinental move by personal escort in the U.S.
Frank Mc Namara pleaded guilty to first degree murder for the February 18 shooting of Captain George Bo Jennings, president of the Jennings Adjustable Shade Company, in Brooklyn. He faces life imprisonment at Sing Sing.
A string of tornadoes across Fairland Pryor Creek and Mt Vernon left seven dead and many injured. Destruction hit business blocks farmhouses and barns with hundreds of thousands in losses. Other reports include a double tragedy of two killed African American children in Pine Bluff and a severe tornado in Mt. Vernon injuring several residents.
