Dr. Sumner Paine renowned revolver marksman and son of General Charles J. Paine died of pneumonia at his home. A member of the American revolver team in the Albens Olympic Games, Paine was 34 years old.
Washington reports United States leads global divorces with 70000 last year while Japan tops with 100000. The Roman Catholic Messenger cites rising trends since 1887, noting US gaps to Japan shrink as statistics show rising rates across states like Massachusetts Ohio Michigan Rhode Island.
The Philadelphia Mint reports record gold coinage since February 6 with $60,180,390 in $20 gold pieces by April 16. In Paris Colonel Marchand is under arrest awaiting punishment for 20 days following a resignation dispute. In Norfolk Virginia a carpenter age 60 John Mor fan died after being struck by his son in law Jefferson James as the men fought. Morgan struck his head on an obstruction.
St Petersburg reports widespread rumors on Japanese moves as Port Arthur’s Russian fleet wanes. Transports sighted toward Newchwang raise fears of a landing and possible flank on Liao Tung. Makaroff’s widow receives a $10,000 annual pension.
The Petr Kochka submarine, one of several Russian boats, could be sent to Port Arthur. Built in nine sections for Transsiberian transport, it is seventy seven feet long, fourteen feet wide, displaces twenty tons, carries twelve men and torpedoes. The czar inspects marines before deployment.

Albany April 14 news from the state convention shows Tammany Hall instructing the delegation to vote for Alton B. Parker for president and to act as a unit. District electors and notable figures such as Isador Straus Robert B. Roosevelt and Hugh J. Grant are listed among delegates and alternates. Pennsylvania Democrats at Harrisburg declined to name a president hopeful, binding delegates to the unit rule.
