Eisenhower upset by distraught woman confrontation outside Smithsonian
A hysterical red haired woman screamed she must reach President Eisenhower as he and Mrs. Eisenhower viewed Churchill paintings at the Smithsonian. Secret Service and police pulled her away after she neared the President within about six feet. She claimed her Army husband’s monthly allotment checks were unavailable. The incident occurred before about 300 onlookers as the President boarded a limousine. The woman, Edith Finch of Brookline, Mass, age listed as 27 or 42 in records, was escorted away in a car. In a separate Baltimore notice, plans were announced for a two day Institute for Probation Officers on May 1 and 2, sponsored by several Maryland agencies to help officers handle juvenile rehabilitation.
