A morning fire in Kanawha City Charleston destroyed a home killing mother Henrietta Brannon Edwards 38 and her children Henrietta 13 Thomas A. Edwards Jr 7 and Mary Whelan Edwards 5. Father Thomas A. Edwards Jr rescued Walter 6 and Kathleen 15.
United States citizens were urged to report to the American consulate in Shanghai if they wished to board U S Navy ships. The move, seen as a first step toward emergency evacuation, warned that boarding ships might prevent return landings and noted the city faced threats from the Chinese civil war.
Detroit April 25. At eleventh hour peace talks between Packard Motor Car Co and the CIO United Auto Workers averted a shutdown. About 9,000 workers were told to report to regular shifts after 16 disputed points were resolved. Pickets were withdrawn and only a skeleton night crew at midnight faced brief disruptions.
In Mercer Pennsylvania on April 25 a 70 year old farmer fought off two bandits using a pitchfork after they assaulted him and bound him with twine in his barn. Mrs O Mahony fled to the barn as the robbers ransacked a desk and found four egg money dollars. O Mahony sustained painful head wounds but pursued the men as one fired a shot which missed and the robbers fled.
Representative Burnside of West Virginia proposes suspending the federal 10 percent excise tax on baby supplies through a doctor’s letter and proof of under three years old. He argues the tax is a luxury and would be avoided by adults, and this bill fulfills a campaign pledge.
First accounting filed in Orphans Court shows real estate appraised at 341 500 and other assets 212 904 48. Disbursements total 171 577 07 with 150 000 set aside for future accounting. Net estate, excluding real estate, 41 327 41, divided between Sara T Rau Lee and Marian M Heater as sole heirs.
London reports Britain preparing strong reinforcements for the Far Eastern fleet, sending undisclosed ships to Hong Kong to bolster two cruisers, flight destroyers and four sloops. Some say two aircraft carriers and submarines included. Churchill presses for explanation to Parliament after Chinese shelling of British ships on the Yangtze.
Pravda printed a long letter attributed to Archibald R. Johnson editor of Britanski Sojuznik. The missive accuses the British government of steering Britain toward slavery to American power and labels the Atlantic Pact a war bloc. Johnson says he will stay in Russia to pursue peace while the British Embassy investigates. The London Foreign Office offered no comment.
At Gordonville Lancaster road crossing near Carthage Tennessee a fast freight rammed a truck crowded with worshippers returning from church. Ten people died nine from one family and one survivor Ruth Robinson was hospitalized with a broken pelvis. The truck burst into flames and was dragged about 100 yards before the train halted.
Maryland officials outline construction of an almost one mile bypass from Route 240 Viers Mill to north of Rockville to divert through traffic from Montgomery avenue. The project would require minimal houses removed, traverse the Baltimore and Ohio tracks, and feature an 80 foot right of way with 30 foot pavement. surveying begins within two weeks and property dedications are planned.
Governor signs bills allowing Sunday sports contests in Emmitsburg from 1 to 6 p m and after p m. Changes include Taneytown election date to the first Monday in June, Mt Airy registration 15 days before elections, New Windsor tax levy up to 75 cents per $100, and dogs proven as owners’ property may face trespass actions and damages for poisoned dogs. Senator Storm introduced the legislation.
A blind musicians group presents an 8:30 Friday recital at Frederick High School auditorium to raise funds for the sightless. Sponsored by the Lions Club, the Blind Artists Concert of Upper Darby trains audiences to judge musicians on merit, not blindness. Newest roster member Estelle Mayer MacBride, Temple University graduate, is a noted composer and pianist.
Jacksonville April 23 Dean J. Lester Hayman of West Virginia University College of Pharmacy urged the eventual development of a six year program at major colleges. He spoke at the annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy with the American Pharmaceutical Association convention underway. The majority of colleges cannot yet inaugurate a six year program, he said, but it should be the goal.
Chinese and Communist forces moved toward Shanghai with reports of Nanking falling to the Communists and Taiyuan in ruins. Residents waited in rain as lines of force and uncertainty mounted about the Reds near Hangchow and the last railway escape routes from Shanghai.

The News Frederick, Md, has been awarded Second Honorable Mention in the less than 10,000 circulation group in the 19th Annual Exhibition of Newspaper Typography sponsored by N. W. Ayer & Son, Inc. The award was based on typography make up and presswork. Winners include The New York Times and several regional papers with special commendations. Judges included Lucian Bernhard and Ernest F. Trotter. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr was to judge.
April 25 Baltimore reports two women survivors in a local hospital after a boat capsized eight miles east of the city in a wind whipped Chesapeake. The five year old boy Charles Wrightson died in the arms of Inez Wrightson. husbands John Wrightson and Fred Moon perished. Moon's wife and Mrs Wrightson were rescued by Baltimore Yacht Club boatmen.
Paris April 25 a V P Volgin vice president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences told the World Congress for Peace that capitalism and communism can coexist peacefully. He backed a Congo Saturday statement by O John Rogge and defended Soviet liberty against Rogge criticism, claiming no exploitation of man by man.
Final preparations for 24 two story houses at Camp Detrick are complete. Post Engineers have razed a Maples Farm house and outbuildings, leveled ground, and installed a sewer system connecting to the Detrick disposal plant. Berenter and Jones Construction Co. of Washington holds the contract with a low bid of 293,228 dollars.

Washington April 25 Legislation to carry out President Truman’s health program was introduced in Congress to provide medical hospital and dental care for about 120 million Americans funded by a payroll tax of three percent. The plan would double hospital construction grants to 150 million yearly and fund nursing training and farmers health cooperatives with multi-year support. Sponsored by Senate Democrats and Rep. Dingell with no Republican signers the measure argues it is a democratic approach to avoid socialized medicine while expanding federal aid for medical education and rural health services.
Washington April 25 The National Labor Relations Board ruled that licensed news vendors of four New York daily newspapers are independent contractors and not covered by federal labor law. The newspapers named are Journal American Post Sun and World Telegram. The decision dismissed a petition by New York Newsboys Union No 471 affiliated with AFL Printing Pressmen’s Union. The board said Congress intended to recognize as employes only those who work for wages under direct supervision.
Cambridge Maryland April 25 Judge Levin Claude Bailey called the recently signed Ober law outlawing subversive activities to the Dorchester county grand jury as the April court term opened.
