Smoot Opens Debate on Revenue Bill and Mellon Tax Plan
Washington April 25 Senator Smoot opened Senate debate defending the Mellon income tax and urging restraint on special appropriations. He argued tax reductions would stimulate business and increase revenues, noting authorities from Wilson to Mellon favor the plan. The bill also includes changes to corporation and estate taxes aimed at easing the tax burden on larger earners while simplifying filing requirements. Three men die in a Charleston fire in Nalden Payette counties.
