Bridge tender keeps watchful eye on boats
Harold Chaney, a 70 year old bridge tender, watches the Kent Narrows draw bridge from a small bridge house. He has worked 12 years on the span linking Kent Island to the Eastern Shore, opening the draw up to 3,781 times yearly. Chaney survived a farm accident and his wife’s cancer death, moving to Maryland and finding a new life as a bridge operator. He praises the job’s responsibility and his colleague Sue Lindner, who also works under him.
