The first half of 1974 shows a mixed picture with rising retail sales of 8 percent over 1973, but declines in building permits and unemployment climbing sharply. Through March 1974 building permits in Frederick City fell 6 percent, county permits down 37 percent. unemployment compensation rose sharply, deposits fell, and overall first quarter activity up 3.4 percent from 1973.
