Mayflower II Drifted Off English Channel In Calms

Mayflower II remains becalmed about 15 miles off the Plymouth coast as it reenacts the Pilgrim voyage. The 32 crewmen, led by Cmdr Alan Villiers, face light winds and mist while Royal Air Force Shackleton aircraft monitor the vessel. Villiers forbids whistling, warns of luck, and offers a daily ration of water as the ship aims to reach Plymouth Mass by May 23. A 17-year-old crew member from Boston represents Boys Clubs of America aboard the ship. Evangelist Renee Martz, 17, will preach at Peoples Church for one week starting Tuesday night backed by Pastor Raymond Edwards.

iPay Raises Expected by Labor Dept Amid Cost-Freeze Plan

Washington April 21 government figures slated for release this week are expected to lift pay for about 1.7 million workers. The increase could total roughly 75 million dollars annually, affecting nearly one million railroad workers and hundreds of thousands in aircraft and electrical manufacturing, with wage rises tied to the living costs index. The rail raise, three cents per hour, hinges on contract formula and the index’s six month timing, likely to be announced by the Labor Department Tuesday or Wednesday.
