Aldermen Hear Residents Seek Street Repairs and Safety
About three residents from various city sections spoke at a regular aldermen meeting asking for seer, curb and gutter and other improvements. The street committee will investigate conditions Saturday. They also urged greater blasting precautions at Shank and Etzler Lime Co. on adjacent properties. Several curb and gutter projects were discussed with cost-sharing and contract awards, including Twelfth and Winchester streets. A large group sought sidewalks on West Fourth Street to connect Hood College to Rosemont, citing postal delivery needs. The street committee will inspect gutters on West South Street and East Fifteenth Street, and bids for stone for street work were invited as weather allows. A baseball diamond was proposed for Municipal Park west of College Avenue for Chapline Auto Supply. Planting telegraph poles for the water lines was awarded to John Marty. Market Master G. William Dansenberger reported receipts from stuns and street polls, and bills were ordered paid.

Hotel Plan Falls
A public sale under mortgage in Hagerstown destroyed plans for a community hotel. Four of six properties on East Washington street and the Square, including the Wilson and Stevenson building, were sold after four years of effort to back the project by local professionals and businessmen. The doomed venture followed failed stock sales and a lack of broad backing for the community hotel idea. An unrelated note on elephants cites Darwin’s figure of 19 million elephants after 70 years if breeding continues unchecked.
