The Co. S. S. Association schedules a convention at Heights opening July 1 with rallies in conference and district venues. Delegates from multiple churches expected to attend, addressing cooperative plans and program expansion.
Baltimore to aid in battling a spreading fire menacing Saunders Range, historic Maryland National Guard summer camp. Major Nichols heads to Saunders Range to muster guardsmen and laborers as flames advance toward barracks and target buildings amid volunteers efforts.
The fifty-sixth annual convention of the Maryland Council of the Junior Order Imorgan Mechanics adjourned in Annapolis after a two day session. Next year the council meets in Cumberland with officers elected including State councilor J Edward Pritchard Baltimore State vice councilor John E France Hagers town and other officers for various posts. Myersville and Cumberland members listed among attendees.
A well attended meeting of the Centennial Memorial United Brethren church and Sunday school discussed plans for a new Sunday school building and a campaign to raise 7000 for the building fund next week. Rev F Berry Plummer spoke on facilities, and C Thos Summers outlined the campaign. Campaign workers will meet Friday at 7 50 pm to receive cards and final instructions.
The annual mass meeting of men from Reformed churches in Frederick county will be held Sunday at Glade Reformed Church Walkersville at 2 o'clock. Rev Abner S DeChant of Emmanuel Reformed Lancaster Pa will deliver the address. Special music by Christ Reformed Middletown quartet. Merril Ramsburg Lewistown is president and Roland E Long Frederick is secretary.
Gulf Port Miss April 22 dispatches say Harold Jackson held in connection with the killing of two federal entomologists was taken from jail at Poplarville and hanged by a mob early today. Jesse Favre who was convicted at Bay St Lewis and given life for murder testified Jackson fired the shots. Favre admitted he was present. The entomologists Weet Lemore and W M Magee were killed during a collecting trip and robbed.
Mauna Loa erupted again near Kona, sending a new lava torrent that threatens the Robert MacWayne ranch after eleven days of activity. The previous lava flow had advanced thirty miles to the sea and begun cooling when this fresh burst appeared along the 1916 eruption line.
Charles Parker, colored, arrested in a weekend city police raid found with a still mash and liquor, was fined 300 and sentenced to three months in the House of Correction by Justice Guy K. Motter, with the sentence suspended after guilty plea. Alton Y. Bennett represented Parker. Owen Adelsberger, from Emututs purg, pleaded guilty to selling intoxicating liquors, fined 200 with six months suspended in the House of Correction, then released.
Rehearsals continue for the Declamation Club event to be held Friday night April 23 in the Frederick High auditorium. Judges are Rev. Chas. D. Shaffer Miss Margaret Shipley and David W. Zimmerman with scoring split among enunciation pronunciation memory interpretation and expression. From ten contestants two will represent Frederick High in the county contest May 4 with music by the F H S orchestra and the Clee Club performing selections.
The first meeting of the newly organized Council gathered scout masters and assistants at Scout headquarters. Leaders from Middletown, Thurmont, Brunswick, Walkersville, and Frederick discussed a four week training course starting April 29 to May 20, free of charge, plus an upcoming hike. Troop numbers were assigned as Middletown No 1, Walkersville No 2, Thurmont No 3, Brunswick No 5, and Maryland State School for the Deaf No 8 with others to follow.
Senator Reed of Missouri led a vivid cross examination as the Senate prohibition committee neared its close. Wet witnesses, including J Pat Murphy and E C Dinwiddie, faced sharp questions while Dinwiddie defended Prohibition and Reed pressed on with pointed remarks about wets as welchers. Mayor Dever of Chicago testified, defending the city against criticism and recounting its 1920s political backdrop.
Miss Nora Yost a 1917 graduate of Troad College spoke at the Wednesday mass meeting on Opportunities in Cafeteria Work. She runs a successful Philadelphia cafeteria and emphasized practical benefits from dietetics experience. A Shenandoah Valley park campaign director also spoke, and scouts leaders were urged to appoint a reporter for The News Scout section with weekly updates.
Frederick readers learn of a city wide observance named Boys Week the first week in May with events scheduled daily May 2 through May 7. Ignatius Bjerlec leads planning as churches clubs and Scouts assist. Notable days include Roy's Day in churches May 2 Boys Day in Schools May 3 Athletics May 4 Citizenship May 5 Industry May 6 Fathers and Sons Day May 7 and a Boy's Day Out on May 8.
William M. Smith, cashier of the First National Bank in Parkersburg, has been missing since April 14. Bank vice president Utteshew says the shortage is about 46,000 dollars and that Smith's bonds are sufficient to cover any loss. The bank’s operations continue with an unusual business day.
About 75 Oda Fellows and Rebekahs toured the new Odd Fellows Home in Baltimore after the Grand Lodge meeting. Grand Master Charlies D. Schone and other officials spoke, with luncheon served by Frederick volunteers. Dorsey Etchison was re elected Grand Representative. next Sovereign Grand Lodge session set for Philadelphia in 1926.
Everhart Post No 11 Middletown presents a three night Memorial Hall event featuring Charleys Aunt on Thursday a Blackface minstrel show on Friday and Thomas Meighan in Irish Guelic on Saturday. The minstrel segment directed by John W Doh includes vaudeville acts a xylophone feature by Gav er and a Charleston dance. Interlocutor Leslie N Coblents and cast members Grove White Roy Gaver Henry Shoemaker Ralph Hod erick perform with ballads and a seven piece orchestra backs the musical numbers hosted by committee chair J Homer Roems berg along with Edward Holter Les le Conlentz Geo C Rhoderick Jr and John W Doub.
Thousands will march in a massive Sunday parade here with traffic restrictions announced by Mayor Lloyd Culler. Plans include parking north of the tunnel at the Fair Grounds and crowd reviews by the mayor and aldermen. Attendance projections cite 20,000 visitors from Baltimore, Washington, Western Maryland and West Virginia.
The Association of British Chambers of Commerce urged the U S to obtain a Supreme Court hearing for British subjects with claims against eight southern states. Alabama Arkansas Florida Georgia Louisiana Mississippi and North and South Carolina allegedly owe about 75 million dollars for industrial and national development loans. Sir James Martin said the sum was roughly 75 million.
The stock market opened with renewed strength after yesterday’s rise. Strong rail earnings reports and railroad merger chatter backed gains while abundant cheap money and easy credit fueled buying at higher prices. Frederick County Health Department reports results from Negro Health Week April 4 to 11. Of 813 colored school children examined, 665 found with defects including 880 decayed teeth and 203 enlarged tonsils. City defects 87 percent. county 75 percent. Tuberculosis screenings flagged nine suspected cases from 26 examined at the Tuberculosis Clinic. A county tuberculosis clinic is slated for April 26 in BrynGwick and a joint clinic with Carroll County set for April 16 at Mt. Airy.
