Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev declared support for the simultaneous abolition of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, telling East Berlin factory workers he could meet U.S. President Reagan if a suitable international climate and real disarmament steps exist. He reiterated a plan to reduce conventional forces and cautioned Washington against using negotiations to seek military superiority.
Lori Cook and her sisters rode with about 200 others in a 30-kilometer charity bike ride to benefit the Frederick County Association for Retarded Citizens. The event netted roughly $15,000 in pledged funds as participants spoke of the ride’s fun and purpose.
About 200 residents marched at the Md 355 and Shady Grove Road site to oppose a solid waste incinerator. Orthopedic surgeon Dr Brian K Zell warned of higher plastics metals and organics in today's trash and possible dioxin emissions. He urged caution about using outdated tech under a for profit operator. County Exec Charlies Gilchrist will decide by June end, with Zell urging residents to stay vigilant.
Three suspects, a 16-year-old Bethesda youth, a 17-year-old Virginia youth, and Anthony Schuyler Crane of Washington, were arrested after dynamite thefts from Stoneyhurst Quarries and explosions in Little Stream Valley park. Arrests charged burglary and possession of explosives, and Crane faces counts of manufacturing explosives without a license, dynamiting property, and possession of explosives.
