Two Frederick boys killed on North Africa front
Telegram from the War Department reports Private Francis Leo Kennedy Jr. and Private Clarence E. Nusz killed in action. Kennedy, 23, son of Francis L. Kennedy and Lorena Marsh Kennedy of 219 East Church Street, and Nusz of Yellow Springs, both had served since 1942. Kennedy was in the First Division after training at Camp Wheeler and service in England and North Africa. Nusz entered service January 28, 1942 and had been stationed in England before deployment.

Pen Mar’s Miniature Railroad Closed By War
Waynesboro Pennsylvania April 20. The Pen Mar line the 40 foot miniature railway once drawing up to 20000 visitors yearly including governors and dignitaries has closed due to wartime gasoline rationing. Operator William A Freigh who retired as an engineer in 1985 to run the line will sell the railroad two locomotives and three cars. The market’s impact follows on the poultry market probe at Salisbury where about 300 regional growers processors and feedmen met with Leo H McCormick OPA director to discuss a black market issue.

A blast at 4 Lee Avenue near Detrick Field blew Mrs. George F. Lartz Jr through a kitchen door and burned three others. The wife, a Frederick High School industrial arts instructor, sustained second degree burns to legs and face with arm and hand burns. Her daughter Florence, 5, had minor facial burns. A nearby resident known as Alice suffered second degree burns on the face. Fire crews extinguished flames. medical examiner and deputy sheriff assisted.

Mrs Annie K Leatherman of Middletown received a telegram saying her son Pvt Charles E Leatherman was seriously wounded in the North Africa area on March 29.
