Statehood for Hawaii cheaper than Alaska costs
NEA Washington Correspondent analysis shows Hawaii would incur roughly $50,000 yearly in state government costs moving from territory to state while residents would still pay federal taxes. Hawaii could gain larger federal grant shares, especially for education. Alaska faces higher federal involvement, with 74 percent of land federally owned and a $150 million annual bill, plus nationwide subsidies for shipping and rail if statehood is granted.
