Maryland's 1981 Assembly starts retrenchment but debates linger
The 1981 General Assembly began cutting government spending with no new tax hikes passing. Gov. Hughes and officials approved a 1 cent per $100 property tax increase to fund bond costs. Proposals to raise gasoline tax, tax trucking, and sales tax on laundry were rejected, keeping spending capped and warning voters that further cuts are needed to curb inflation and boost welfare, education, and infrastructure.
