Montgomery County approves record budget and tax hike
The Montgomery County Council adopted a record $53.4 million budget raising the tax rate by 12 cents to $2.15 per $100 of assessed valuation. Operating expenses total $36.3 million and capital improvements $17.399 million. Schools receive $15.7 million for operating costs, with the debt service at $5 million. The plan includes teacher pay raises up to $500 and additional levies for suburbs, fire protection, parks, recreation, and planning. A separate proposal suggests tax anticipation certificates to ease tax payments, pitched by Finance Director Alex Hancock.
