Orville Johnson Known as Papoose Brightens South Market Street
Orville Papoose Johnson a 58 year old retired NIH cook greets morning commuters with a wave on South Market Street for ten years with Nova his German Shepherd. Neighbors and drivers say the regular wave brings smiles as government workers, bus drivers and postal trucks pass by. Johnson relocated from Joe Street where he earned the nickname. He began the routine after retirement to exercise Nova and spread cheer. He schedules eight neighborhood trips starting at 6 30 and pauses at 7 30 on South Market Street. He once allowed Nova to wear a sign for a catering business but the Humane Society objected and the sign was removed. He continues daily unless weather or illness intervene.
