Washington Post admits it was victim of hoax
The Washington Post apologized for printing a fabricated profile of a supposed one year old heroin addict tied to a Pulitzer Prize winning piece. Janet Cooke relinquished the prize and resigned after admitting the story was a composite and the quoted child did not exist. The paper said the hoax harmed credibility and pledged to investigate and regain reader trust.
