Minimum Pay Of 90 Cents Is Proposed In Congress

The Eisenhower administration urged Congress to extend the Fair Labor Standards Act to 2.2 million more workers and raise the minimum to 90 cents an hour. Mitchell defended the plan against calls for a $1 or higher wage, citing cost of living and the goal of a wage floor rather than a wage substitute. He noted 24 million workers currently earn 75 cents and argued the move would more than offset living-cost increases since 1956. Southern opposition concerns about farm wages and indirect effects on poultry and light industries were raised, while farm workers remain exempt. The hearings, linked to broader debates, may continue for weeks.
