Second Degree Verdict in Dewitt Murder Case

Hubert William DeWitt was found guilty of second degree murder in the death of his three month old daughter Patricia Ann in Oakland Maryland. The judge withheld immediate sentencing and the jury deliberated from 3:30 p.m. to about 9 p.m. The defendant denied smothering the child and disputed a handwritten confession. He claimed he signed it only after State's Attorney Pagenhardt promised leniency, a claim denied by the prosecutor. DeWitt described the events leading to the death after hunting, returning home, and finding the baby dead, with the child later buried near their Sang Run home. The trial included testimony about a jail confession and a note stating he used a bottle on the baby. A flood control bid near Cumberland was reported, with an apparent low bid of $817,480 by E. J. Albrecht.
