Budget committee slashes Reagan budget plan yet again
The Senate Budget Committee, with 10 Democrats and 12 Republicans, redrafted Reagan's budget, likely backing tax increases in 1984. They left large welfare and housing outlays intact while proposing $11.3 billion above Reagan non-defense spending. Democrats urged $30 billion in new taxes to trim the deficit and reconsider cost-of-living indexing in 1985. Washington moves toward a clash on military spending and tax policy.
