Chesapeake Canal Parkway Seen as Gateway to the West

Washington April 14 The plan to develop a parkway along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal from Great Falls to Cumberland aims to fulfill George Washingtons vision of a direct link between the nation’s capital and the West. Jointly proposed by the National Park Service and the Bureau of Public Roads the project would reuse canal land for recreation and provide controlled access from Washington into the mountains while preserving historic aqueducts and locks. Opposition arises in Hagerstown and Baltimore areas, with sportsmen groups opposing wild area loss, yet Maryland officials see potential recreational value and land needs estimated at about 26 million dollars, while total parkway costs run around 17 million. The canal’s history from 1828 to its 1924 closure under Baltimore and Ohio ownership frames today’s blueprint to integrate history, scenery, and public access along a 168 mile route toward Cumberland.
