Budget Pruning Time for County Board of Commissioners
Budget estimates total 23.07 million, 4.48 million above the current year. A 1.02 dollar increase in the realty tax rate would be needed to fund all requests, with education the largest share and capital needs under review. The board has until June 1 to finalize cuts, facing inflation, state and federal tax pressures.

Nixon aims for gradual Vietnam withdrawal with 50,000 left
President Nixon pledges no fixed date for full pullout while Vietnamization proceeds, allowing a residual force around 50,000 to symbolize American demands. He insists negotiations must include immediate and unconditional POW releases, and warns setting a date would aid the enemy. The plan mirrors a cautious pace linked to prisoner talks and continued South Vietnamese self defense.
