Tydings and Lodge Clash Over Ayer Appointment
In Washington on April 12 Senate inquiry head Sen Tydings blocked Frederick Ayer Jr from serving as assistant counsel to avoid political influence in the probe into Communist charges at the State Department. Sen Lodge defended Ayer noting his prior committee approval and questioned the move as discourteous. Tydings said Ayer should decline the post while campaigning for Massachusetts attorney general.

iColleges Must Pay Md. Admissions Tax
Maryland Attorney General Hall Hammond affirms that intercollegiate athletic events are subject to the state admissions tax. Western Maryland College argued games fund physical education and should be exempt, but the opinion held the receipts from ticket sales do not fit an educational exemption. The ruling cites a Georgia case and notes the Legislature did not intend to exempt such gross receipts.
