The blazes caused about 15000 dollars in damage Easter Sunday morning. The man, Willoughby Litzenberger of Manheim, was an attendant at Lancaster General Hospital and held on arson charges.
Secretary of State Acheson said plans to remove about 2000 Americans and other foreigners from Shanghai by sea have been abandoned due to difficulties with the Chinese Communists. He said efforts will seek Communist approval to move refugees to a North China port or to Hong Kong, with 300 Americans and 450 British citizens among those affected.

Harold W. Sanford, editor of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle for 13 years, died in his sleep on April 5. Born February 15, 1890, he joined the Rochester Journal, a Gannett paper, in 1910. His daughter Ann Sanford graduated Hood College in 1948.
