Weather aided 1943 farm output expected to beat last year
Agriculture Secretary Wickard told the Senate Agriculture Committee that with favorable weather 1943 farm production including livestock would exceed last year’s record. He warned against Pace bill pricing that would include farm labor costs, saying it would trigger an inflationary spiral. Pace argued labor costs are rising and blamed price controls for ignoring this. The hearings also touched on ICC rate decisions and a 300 mile straight railway track in Australia.

Heavy War Bond Drive Opens Across Nation
Americans on the home front begin the 13 billion dollar war bond drive with strong early buying and steady pledges. Treasury reports suggest higher first day pace than last December, as volunteers push to meet a 25 billion individual borrowing goal for 1943 and bolster supplies for wartime costs. The campaign targets include banks, corporations, and insurers, with emphasis on mobilizing idle current earnings to fund the war effort. Rhenium Found In Useful Amounts In Dust From Mills
Rhenium, a rare metal heavier than gold, was found in usable quantities in flue dust from American seed mills. University of Tennessee researchers A. D. Melaven and J. A. Bacon presented the discovery to the American Chemical Society, noting the metal’s resemblance to tungsten and platinum in heat resistance and its potential as a catalyst. The fume dust yields rhenium when washed, with future work aiming to reduce Germany’s role as a supplier.
