Thousands of men who became fathers before September 15 1942 are now deferred from the draft as fathers under a new Selective Service regulation. Local boards must classify these men as 3-A or 3-D if extreme hardship applies, with farmers retaining 2-C and a revised 3-B elimination shifting many to 3-C or 2-A.

Washington April 12 War Manpower Commissioner Paul V. McNutt announced revised Selective Service classifications. The 1-A and IV groups include exemptions for essential civilian work and age based deferments, with I-A for military readiness and IV-F for unfitness. Several subcategories cover conscientious objectors and occupational deferments, including agricultural, war production, and religious roles.
Parsons Newman Local Draft Board One chairman announced there will be no blanket deferments for Frederick city police. He said the department falls under the area covered by the local board and each case will be decided on its merits. Chief Poulsen noted nine officers were subject to call soon.
Washington April 12 Speaker Rayburs urged joint Democratic Republican action to enact quickly a 20 percent withholding levy against taxable wages and salaries to help prevent inflation.
Baltimore police report a purse snatcher grabbed a rack from Mrs. Joseph Danton and fled with about $2030 in cash and jewelry after leaving a tavern where she and her husband hosted furloughed men. Officers chased but the suspect vanished into nearby woods.
A passenger train and a freight train collided on the west side of Indianapolis this morning. Three crew members died: George Wilson aged 52 a brakeman Ferry Jarvis the engineer and Floyd Scarlett a fireman, all from Indianapolis. The freight train crew part of a southbound small train collided with the Big Four St Louis Limited eastbound into the city.
