Welfare payments rise in March threaten relief funds

Baltimore Maryland welfare expenditures jumped about 30 thousand dollars in March, signaling that current spending may dry up emergency funds before June 30. Welfare Director Thomas J. S. Waxter warned the economic slide could worsen by July 1 without state or federal aid. The Board of Public Works authorized 114 thousand dollars from emergency funds to cover welfare costs, with projected monthly spending around 378 thousand dollars until July 1, and a likely need to tap further in April. The legislature also allotted 230 thousand dollars in emergency welfare funds for the year.
