Easter Around the World Draws Large Crowds

Early Attack Not Planned in Formosa Area

Secretary Stevens returning from the Far East tour said he does not foresee an imminent Chinese Communist offensive in Formosa. He declared Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists could "give a very good account of themselves" if attacked. He spoke after meetings with military chiefs and officials in Japan, South Korea, and Formosa. He noted no early attack was expected.

176 Possible Treason Cases Are Considered

Washington reports the Justice Department is examining 176 possible treason cases and expects many more involving GIs captured by the Communists in Korea. Assistant Attorney General William F. Tompkins, the security chief, said a large number of potential espionage cases are under review, with no plan to prosecute all rank and file Communist party members.

Court brushes aside charges in Provoo trial appeal

A federal judge ruled that Provoo and associate Mwir cannot receive a fair trial this time, dismissing or delaying charges. The government retains the option to appeal the decision as the case moves through the process in Baltimore.
