A Baltimore syndicate seeks iron ore on Middletown Valley lands with leases set at twenty five cents per ton. Owners including Coblentz, Holter, Bussard, Mrs Main and Kempbe signed agreements after negotiations in Frederick with Charles W. Ross Esq. The venture hinges on ore being found in paying quantities, which locals anticipate will boost county wealth.
Excitement in New Windsor as the Legislature pass a local option style bill restricting liquor sales. A compromise allows licenses for three of four town dealers with rules of early closing and bans on sales to intoxicated persons and specified groups including New Windsor College students. One dealer rejects the compromise.
Bennington Gill Blanchan a retired Westminster merchant died at his East Green street home after several weeks illness. A New York City native, he came to Maryland after the war, worked as a book-keeper in Baltimore, then settled in Westminster. He served as assistant secretary of the Westminster Savings Station and was active in Ascension Episcopal Church. He leaves a wife Geneva Marsh and a daughter Eva Blanchard.
In Congress a bill to revive the lieutenant general rank was favorably reported. Senators Call Hoar Sherman Eustis and Teller discussed the Montana election case. In the House Cheadle introduced a bill to reclassify and adjust railroad postal clerks salaries. The naval appropriation bill progressed in committee. A paragraph attacking a provision for three battleships but leaving an armored cruiser was struck by a 98 to 70 vote.
State Treasurer Stevenson Archer was seized at Hazel Dell by Detective Pumphrey and read a governor’s summons charging malfeasance and misappropriation of state funds. Warrant issued by Judge Harlan and authorities say Archer’s case could move to Annapolis or Baltimore depending on the legal finding. The arrest followed days of guarding Archer as a grand jury considers embezzlement versus malfeasance.
Freedom district of Carroll county including Sykesville will vote on the local option next Tuesday. The temperance question has sparked rising interest and a series of temperance meetings are scheduled between now and election day.

She attended a matinee at Laxrris Academy, spoke with a Sun reporter, praised acting, said she studied with Rose Eytinge, and plans to go to California with her company.
