U S 15 Crack Worsens and Tests Continue at Site

The northbound lanes of U S 15 at Catoctin Furnace remain closed as the sinkhole expands. Drill bore tests over the weekend will be known Tuesday or Wednesday, with repair possibly taking another week. The crack length grows to about 250 feet and the road sank another inch to roughly three inches.

Legislators OK school board bill in Maryland

The Maryland House of Delegates approved a bill to bar people married to teachers or school administrators from Frederick County's school board. Passing 74 to 28, with 39 not voting, the measure now goes to Governor Schaefer for final action. Lead sponsor Sen. Charles Smelser said the move prevents future conflicts of interest.

U S jets return fire after Iraqi artillery attack

Four U.S. warplanes were fired on by Iraqi artillery in the northern no fly zone in Iraq. They returned fire with four cluster bombs from three F 16s and an F 4G but were not hit. The planes backed to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. An Iraqi guard at a dam was wounded by bombing.

Delegates back Cullen change-of-use hearings bill

The Maryland General Assembly advanced Sen. John Derr's measure requiring public hearings near state owned facilities before major changes of use. The bill, born from the Victor Cullen Academy controversy, faces Senate reconsideration due to House amendments and could pass final passage today or Monday.

Middletown choirs win grand champion at national contest

Two Middletown High School choirs, a mixed chorus and a chamber group, won first in their divisions and the grand champion honor at a national competition in Orlando, earning national exposure and a trip to Walt Disney World after raising 23000 with the Choral Booster Club. They performed Mendelssohn Psalm 43 and Hall Johnson spiritual, with about 60 students competing against nine other choirs. Gov. Thomas Johnson High School placed third in concert band and its percussion received a special commendation.

Two Teens Charged After BB Gun Threat on Beltway

Maryland State Police charged two 17 year olds from Gaithersburg and Germantown with assault after a commuter reported threats with a BB pistol a pump master rifle and a BB rifle seen in a car on the Capital Beltway during evening rush hour no injuries were reported five teens were in the car but only the driver and one passenger were arrested and released to parents.

History buff's guns banned from schools

A Knoxville history buff who wore 18th century attire and brought a handmade long rifle and an Indian tomahawk to county schools to teach buckskinners and Indians will not be allowed back with his weapons. The case involves state gun safety rules and a debate over permanently disabling the rifle to permit school entry.
