Labor Loses Fight Against Hobbs Bill
Washington reports that organized labor lost its first legislative battle of the 78th Congress as the House passed the Hobbs bill to make robbery and extortion punishable under the 1934 Anti-Racketeering Act by a 270 to 107 vote. The debate featured a rejected Celler amendment aimed at preserving unions’ legal rights under existing laws. The vote followed intense testimony from labor leaders and lawmakers praising or opposing the measure, which Congress supporters framed as necessary to curb labor excesses. Also noted, local supervisors held a Friday night meeting to organize and elect a president with appointments for attorney and clerk deferred.
