Tokio reports a blaze breaking out at 1 o clock Sunday morning destroying four square miles of the famed Yoshiwara district. Water runs out as a strong wind drives rapid spread. Soldiers guard the scene while many residents and visitors flee or leap from three story structures.
John M. Andrews a prominent Warren business man and former water works superintendent stands charged with the January 27 murder of Emile Amman. Amman, a trusted colleague, was found shot near a reservoir. a revolver gifted to Andrews by attorney W. I. Allen was linked to the case amid a continuing police and Pinkerton probe.
Nearly all victims of the Throop mine blast were convicts and foreign workers. Seventy three dead, sixty eight men unable to speak English, forty four widows and 137 orphans. Proclamations closed town businesses and schools until burials complete while benefits are organized for families.
Banner Alabama April 10 128 killed in the Banner mine disaster with 111 convicts and 12 white workers among the victims. Rescue efforts slowed by afterdamp and a fallen official. Officials consider safety powder and lamp ignition as the likely cause while miners raced to the entrance to escape.
A Raham student and assistant pastor at John Hall Memorial chapel was attacked by two men and died at Flower Hospital after failing to regain consciousness. No arrests have been made. A medical note references Chamberlain's Cough Remedy as pleasant tasting for colds and coughs.
Amherst Mass April 10 Professor Clarence Anbens told an Amherst college English class that swearing is as necessary as any language. He argued that when hurt you speak instinctively with an oath, a universal form of expression understood by all, regardless of foreign language. He is a Yale graduate of 1905.
In a fogbound scene at Fire Island on April 1 a German steamer named Prinzess Irene was hauled off the sandbar. Tugs rallied, the red danger flag was lowered, and the vessel began churning water as two tugs signaled before she headed back to New York.
Manhattan, April 10. An 87 year old Manhattan farmer named John Booth pledges to donate most of his fortune before death. He already funded an all children's playground in Manhattan with 1000 dollars and recently gave 2000 dollars to the Manhattan Young Men's Christian Association. Booth, who lives alone, has no close relatives and says he has more than 40,000 dollars to spare. He insists gifts must be carefully directed to ensure genuine impact and must satisfy him before any distribution.
William Jones twenty nine of 613 Snyder Avenue Philadelphia, sought for blowing open a Merchantville NJ safe, hid in his mother's house but drank laudanum and gas to end his life. He was removed to St Agnes Hospital in critical condition. Nearby, Boston saw six inches of snow on April first with strong winds, disrupting harbor traffic. President Taft invited to address the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen in Harrisburg on May 14.

In Lancaster April 10 a badly decomposed body was found in the Con estiga at Engleside thought to be John Ruth, a prominent cigar maker missing for months. Ruth's disappearance sparked a citywide sensation with no clear reason for his leaving or fate.
