Johns Hopkins to house Hubble telescope research program
Baltimore hosts the Space Telescope Science Institute at Johns Hopkins University as the Hubble Space Telescope prepares for its first 15 year orbit. Nearly 400 astronomers reflect on 11 years of work to ready the telescope, with 260 projects planned in the first year and proposals from 556 applicants. The institute will operate 24 hours a day, control telescope pointing, and make data available after a year, boosting Baltimore’s status in astronomical research and prompting a $37 million university building expansion.
