The 1990 Maryland General Assembly is remembered for its many defeats rather than laws. Negotiations on the governor’s drug plan dominated the closing day as leaders clashed and limited output reflected tensions between the governor and legislators.

Walkersville man dies in three-car crash on Md 26

A Walkersville resident, 52 year old Charles R. Henderson, died in a three vehicle crash on Md 26 near Liberty Road just east of Arthur Shipley Road. Henderson's Nissan station wagon collided head on with a Mazda driven by 20 year old Robert E. Sauter of Sykesville after the Mazda crossed into the westbound lanes. A Subaru was also present in the westbound lane. Police reported the incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. Monday.

Space agency scraps Discovery launch with Hubble aboard

NASA scrubbed the Discovery liftoff at Cape Canaveral due to a problem in the Auxiliary Power Unit four minutes before launch. Astronauts waited as engineers assessed the issue, delaying the mission which carries the Hubble Space Telescope. If the APU must be replaced, delays extend days. batteries can hold charge through Friday.

Reeder files to run for Frederick County Commissioner

Bruce L. Reeder, 63, chairman of Frederick County Democratic Central Committee, filed to run for county commissioner. Retired from Airpax Corp. after 34 years, he plans to use business experience to tackle drugs, growth planning, and senior care, with emphasis on school drug programs, rehabilitation, water quality on the Monocacy River, and protecting fixed incomes from tax increases.

Heartly House plans expansion in Frederick for 1992 and beyond

Advocates for domestic violence victims outline an expansion to Heartly House in Frederick including funded legal services, broader shelter capacity, and relocation of administrative offices to near the courthouse. The plan includes a full time attorney, a legal assistant, and a part time secretary with a grant goal of 350 thousand dollars from HUD and a Maryland Legal Services Corp grant of about 30 thousand dollars.

Shot fired at Hanson apartments during drug incident

Police responded to a frantic call from John Hanson Apartments in Frederick Monday night. Two Montgomery County homicide detectives tried to interview suspects when a shot was heard. The two men were held at gunpoint by officers until Frederick City Police arrived. one suspect allegedly discarded suspected crack cocaine.
