World food balance sparks US EC clash at Brussels talks
At the World Food Conference in Brussels, U.S. and European officials clashed over curbing surpluses while much of the Third World remains hungry. Lyng urged ending farm subsidies by 2000, while Andriessen argued stabilization and protectionism are needed. Kenneth Kaunda urged freer trade and self sufficiency, warning against dumping surplus stock in aid. Delegates debated shifting to income supports for needy farmers and a multilateral path through GATT.
