Lefty Groves Fails to Close Game as Nats Tops Baltimore
Lefty Groves worked five innings for Baltimore against the Philadelphia Nationals, yielding four runs that matched the score. An error by Fritz Matsel in the fourth inning kept the Phillies from finishing the four-run frame, costing Baltimore. Jimmy Dykes, formerly of Gettysburg and a Blue Ridge League alum, set two major league batting records per the Sporting News record book, including most chances at second base in a game and the season’s highest assists by a second baseman with 522. Joe Brophy, Martinsburg third baseman, may skip the Blue Ridge League this season and seek independent play in Cumberland. Martinsburg hopes to re-sign him.
