100 Killed In Train Wreck Near Rio de Janeiro
A wood burning passenger locomotive plunged into a flood swollen river north of Rio de Janeiro killing about 100 and injuring more than 200. The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. as many travelers were asleep. Officials blamed flood undermining bridge supports on the Leopoldina Railway recently nationalized by the government. The train left for Campos with 28 cars, most passengers headed for Easter holidays. The engineer escaped and two Hindmen were among the dead. Rescuers recovered 15 bodies in the first hours, while others remained in cars or washed away.

I Object To Court Trial On Good Friday
Albert Edwin Clark of Baltimore writes to Frederick magistrates protesting a Good Friday court summons for a minor traffic matter. He explains age 74, a salesman, opposes appearing in court on the holiday and offers a $645 check in case his plea is overruled. He cites tag renewal delays and a late trip, noting no magistrate is sitting today and Maryland courts have previously favored his immunity from appearance on Good Friday.

Withhold Funds Protest Curtailment From River Ferry Service
Auditor Edgar B. Lima said he will withhold state funds from the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin after the Supreme Court action upholding his refusal to pay a state appropriation to the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission. The 1948 legislature allotted 3,600 dollars for each of two years. Sims, who approved the current year’s appropriation, will not honor next year’s requisition after July 1. The Potomac group includes West Virginia Virginia Maryland Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. The Ohio River group was invalidated by the Supreme Court over surrender of police power and constitutional constraints.
