Dual highway section to link Frederick and Baltimore planned
The State Roads Commission will open bids at noon April 25 for another section of the dual highway extending from near West Friendship toward Lisbon in Howard County. The project, part of a broader plan to connect Frederick and Baltimore, includes 3,246 miles of roadway from West Friendship to beyond the Yorgan's Corner road, with future extensions toward Ridgeville and possibly Frederick. The Ritter Corporation is building a five and a half mile segment from Pine Orchard to near West Friendship, with an overpass and a cloverleaf planned at the western end, at an estimated cost of 1,689,397 dollars, potentially not opening to traffic until next year.

Washington Watchmen Murdered in Lansburghs Store
Two Lansburghs night watchmen were found stabbed to death in the Washington department store. John C. Carpenter aged about 36 and Oliver R. Hess aged 56 were discovered on the first floor washroom and on a sixth floor near a freight elevator. Police reported no clear motive or stolen items and over 60 detectives joined the hunt. The murder weapon was a bloodstained eight inch butcher knife. Hess carried a gun but was unable to use it. Carpenter, a six year veteran, bachelor, lived locally while Hess formerly guarded a government building and resided in Baltimore.
