Three Houses Damaged By Flames In Middle Alley
Fire damaged three middle alley frame houses occupied by colored residents about 11 45 this morning. Firemen battled the blaze from all city units, prevented spread to adjacent homes, and extinguished the fire after about an hour. Gas Electric Rates Increased in Baltimore Area

Alfred E B Jones 70 a well known Mason in Maryland died after a four week illness in Franklin Square Hospital Baltimore. A former Baltimore businessman he had served as secretary of the coordinated bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Baltimore and Orient of Maryland for ten years. Funeral services are set for Saturday. Survivors include his wife Nellie Brennan a son Alfred E B Jones Jr and a grandson Alfred E B Jones 3rd all of Baltimore.

Fire destroys Mrs Byron antiques truck near Frederick
A Williamsport owned 1941 Chevrolet truck carrying Mrs Katharine E Byron personal belongings and antiques was almost totally destroyed west of Frederick at 8 45 am. The vehicle operated by Frank Ripple escaped with passengers William Ripple and Oscar Rice. Cause sighted as mattress fire from a passing cigarette. Forging Joint Account Checks Nets Five-Year Term
Annapolis April 7 A Washington garage magnate Balding Douglas Howard 45 drew a five year jail term for forging checks on a joint account opened in Annapolis by Ben C Hortig and Mrs Hazel C Drybread. Howard pleaded guilty to 18 counts of forgery as Judge James Clark presided Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. The Farmers National Bank reported seven thousand seven hundred twelve dollars in bad checks drawn from the 1947 account. Hortig testified he owned auto garages in Washington and resided at the Wardman Park hotel claiming he never used the account, which had more than thirty thousand dollars deposited. The shortfall was discovered last November when a Drybread check for a hospital payment bounced.
