The budget amendments would slash school funding by 420000 if the pay bill stalls. Teachers call the move a loaded gun to their heads as they fight for higher wages after three years without a raise. Overs, president of the teachers and faculty association, says retention and competitiveness suffer. The bill caps salary increases at 4 percent next year, despite the governor seeking 7 percent. Overs notes six teachers left last year and fears more departures, urging amendments for recruitment through tenure, leave, sabbatical, and comp time provisions.
