Public housing fights split Congress on 1960 bill
In a tense House clash Republicans and Democrats offered rival housing plans with the White House goal in mind. Both sides blocked their own proposals as votes fell 180 to 64 and 164 to 72. A final Democratic bid to overturn the trend failed. The bill would let President Eisenhower ease FHA down payments and extend loan terms up to 30 years, with higher loan limits for home improvements.

Pre Strike Poll Plan Approved by House Labor Committee
The House Labor Committee endorsed in principle President Eisenhower's pre strike poll plan to gauge worker support for a walkout. The panel approved 23-5 a Kearns proposal funding lawful strikes only with worker approval and 18-9 a plan requiring a majority of eligible union members in a pre strike vote. A no vote requirement was defeated 17-11. The bill would have pre strike balloting arranged by the U S Mediation and Conciliation Service but conducted by state or private agencies. The panel aims to finish the bill by Tuesday and resume Monday to finalize. Senate Labor Committee completed its version this week.
