Spring has started with vegetation ahead of normal. Hay and pasture show a strong start due to adequate moisture and mild weather, while winter grain is well advanced. Orchard fruit is slower than expected. frost risk remains. Spring seeding of clover and grasses should finish, with light discing or cultipacking advised if needed. Topdressing small grains is debated. high nitrogen feeds may raise yields but could risk lodging in some fields. Oats should be planted promptly. Frank Bentz outlines topdressing guidelines for bluegrass pastures and legume-grain mixes.
