Rotary Club Hears Dr Yu on IGY Solar Activity
Dr Ching Yu of Hood College spoke to the Frederick Rotary Club about the International Geophysical Year. He described IGY as a global basic research program with 20,000 to 34,000 scientists from 64 nations and data centers in the United States, Soviet Union, and Western Europe. A film by Eugene Bishop showed solar flares, prominences, and sunspots observed from July 1957 for 18 months. Findings include a possible hydrogen atmosphere between Earth and Sun, shifts in Earth’s magnetic field from space, a dangerous radiation band, and satellites enabling these discoveries. The Sun is a big power plant.
