Local meat dealers report a week of changing supply from scarce to abundant while consumer demand remains weak. High point value meats and rationed goods like hams and shoulders see little movement and prices rise for uneconomical poultry. East Patrick Street operator C Jim Shull closes shop citing heavy government restrictions and costs.
Mrs. Mary Gregory of this city resigns as assistant clerk to the County Commissioners to return to her former Montevue clerk position. The Montevue post had been left open since her December appointment as assistant clerk. Officials indicated demand for Montevue duties and noted her work as assistant was satisfactory. Mrs Gregory begins Montevue duties today, succeeding Curry W. Geesory. Trout, Montevue matron, had acted as clerk pending a permanent appointment. Officials did not state when a successor would be named.
London reports that Australian patrols on Goodenough and the Trobriand Islands captured hundreds of Japanese survivors from smashed convoys in the Bismarck Sea. More than 100 were killed resisting. Allied airmen have repeatedly thwarted Japanese reinforcement attempts in northeastern New Guinea.
Pfc. Willard Money of the Army Air Corps, reported missing in action after the fall of Bataan, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross at Army headquarters in Washington. General Saunders presented the medal to Money’s parents as officials noted his nine B 17 flight from Honolulu to the Philippines in 1941.
