Whittemore Arrives in Buffalo for Bank Robbery Trial

Washington April 2 AP The Senate Prohibition Committee refused to issue subpoenas for eighteen witnesses sought by the wets for next week hearings. The panel split four to one with Senator Reed voting to sustain Senator Edge’s request that police chiefs judges sheriffs doctors and others be subpoenaed for possible modification of the Volstead Act and the 18th amendment. The committee plans to summon only governmental officials. Senator Edge said formal subpoenas were needed to bring many witnesses. Senator Walsh led the opposition arguing the liquor issue differs from prior inquiries.
