Church predicts violence over El Salvador low pay scale
In Sal Salvador, the Roman Catholic Church warned the country will face escalating violence unless the government raises peasant wages and reduces rents. Archbishop Romero framed the plea as a demand for peaceful channels for the poorest, denying church involvement in Easter week clashes that left 29 dead and 50 wounded. The government counters by citing a military sweep near San Pedro Perulapan against leftist peasant groups linked to church partners. Reports describe National Guard patrols and vigilante activity, with conflicting claims over occupation and return of residents.
