Tobacco tax plan eyed to fund teachers pay raise
A Maryland legislative conference committee reported agreement in principle on a teachers pay raise funded by tobacco taxes. The plan would raise average salaries by about 400 to 440 dollars per teacher with a 3 cent per pack cigarette tax and 1 to 3 cent cigars tax, while the House proposed a higher income tax rate of 2.5 percent to fund a 440 dollar average raise. A final written report was promised for tomorrow morning as the 90 day session nears its close.
